Description and Uses

Nervonic acid, also known as shark oil acid, is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that exists in nerve tissue and fish oil. It was first discovered in shark brain and is a component of cerebroside, the main source of in shark brain and shark oil. It is also found in the sphingolipids of white matter in human brain.

Nervonic acid is a bioactive substance possessing multiple physiological functions. It can repair nerve cell damage caused by oxidative stress and alleviate motor impairments in mice with Parkinson's disease. Increasing dietary nervonic acid also improves metabolic parameters and limits weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet [1]. Furthermore, faecal nervonic acid serves as a biomarker for diagnosing and monitoring inflammatory bowel disease [2].
