Description and Uses
(Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (also known as Looplure) is an unsaturated short-chain fatty acid ester that acts as an important pheromone in certain insects and animals, such as the cabbage looper [Trichoplusia ni (Hübner)] and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). The female Asian elephant releases a pre-ovulatory urine pheromone (namely Looplure) prior to mating, thereby signalling to the male that she is ready to mate. Consequently, this substance is primarily used in the preparation of insect traps.
(7Z)-Dodecenyl Acetate is a sex pheromone of the cabbage looper Trichoplusia which is synthezied via nucleophilic substitution reaction between the Grignard reagent of the protected bromohydrin with (Z)-2-hepten-1-yl acetate in the presence of CuI catalyst.
