In acidic environments, it adsorbs onto the surface of metals (such as low-carbon steel) to form a protective barrier, significantly slowing down the rate of metal corrosion [1]. In aqueous solutions, it forms aggregates that effectively dissolve and extract hydrophobic organic compounds (such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) [2].
