Description and Uses

Dibutyl disulfide (DBDS) forms the oil phase dispersed as droplets in a synthetic aqueous caustic oil-in-water emulsion that is separated by nanobubble flotation[3]. Di-n-butyl disulfide serves as the disulfide partner in nickel-catalyzed thiolation of aryl iodides, reacting with aryl iodides in DMF at 110 °C under NiBr2-bpy and zinc to give aryl n-butyl sulfides, including the coupling with 2-iodotoluene to n-butyl 2-tolyl sulfide in 76% yield[1]. Dibutyl disulfide acts as the model disulfide in a UV-induced disulfide formation reaction, immobilizing hydrophobic butyl groups on a thiol-functionalized film and raising the static water contact angle from 54° to 118°. Surface modification with dibutyl disulfide under a moving photomask produces a wettability gradient on the thiol-functionalized surface[2].
