Description and Uses

Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ-NA2) is a water-soluble quinone compound that has a strong antioxidant capacity. This product is a reddish-brown colored powder. It is isolated from cultures of methylotrophic bacteria and tissues of mammals. This essential nutrient is vital for mammals, playing a crucial role in enhancing immune function.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium salt (PQQ), as a prototypical oxidoreductase auxiliary group, exhibits superior aqueous solubility and biocompatibility. Beyond its application as a novel food ingredient, PQQ holds promise for use in battery technology. Research has reported an efficient phenanthrazine-expanding strategy based on a diamine-dicarbonyl cyclisation reaction, extending the aromatic fusion ring system of PQQ to yield two water-soluble, redox-active n-heterocyclic compounds: PQQPS and PQQPC. Following the expansion of the π-conjugated structure, their redox potentials exhibited favourable negative shifts exceeding 330 mV. This significantly enhanced the specific capacity (22.63 Ah L−1) and power output (0.205 W cm−2) of aqueous organic redox flow batteries (aORFB), with a capacity retention rate of 97.5% after over 800 cycles (i.e., 99.996% cycle−1 or 99.85% day−1).
